Dr Ivanova-Stoilova graduated in 1979 in Sofia, gained a PhD in Anaesthesia and Pathophysiology in 1985 in St Petersburg, FRCA in 1997 and has been a Consultant in anaesthesia and pain management since 1999. Dr Ivanova-Stoilova became a Foundation Fellow of RCA in 2007.
Dr Ivanova-Stoilova is a full time consultant in pain medicine, one of only two in Wales. She sees patients with all types of intractable musculosketal, neuropathic, medically unexplained and cancer pain. On average her annual workload includes 500 new patients, 850 interventions and 1200 follow ups.
Her approach is detailed analysis of pain modalities and function for precise diagnosis, medication optimisation, through occupational therapy advice, guided physical rehabilitation and life style coaching. Dr Ivanova-Stoilova performs a full range of interventional techniques under local anaesthesia in day case settings and under X-ray guidance with minimum disruption of patient's activities.
Dr Ivanova-Stoilova's intervential proficiency includes all types of peripheral nerve blocks, blocks of autonomic ganglia (stellate ganglion, lumbar sympathetic, celiac, and hypogastric plexus block), spinal root blocks, spinal facet joint blocks, sacr-iliac and sacral root blocks, botulinum toxin for muscle pain, radiofrequency denervation and pulsed radiofrequency treatment of painful scars or neuromas.
Dr Ivanova-Stoilova founded the first in the UK diabetic polyneuropathy pain clinic. She has got a special interest in investigations of unexplained pain and has been able to diagnose for the first time and successfully treat patients with pseudoradicular pain, myogenic neuropathic syndromes and postoperative pain.
Dr Ivanova-Stoilova is the author of more than 53 peer reviewed publications and has chapters in two reference books. She is an invited lecturer to many educational pain forums in the UK and abroad, including the prestigious University Pain Education Programme in Cambridge and Pan European Pain Specialist Programme.
Dr Ivanova-Stoilova regularly holds open patient education days and works closely with patient charities such as Diabetes UK and The National Neuropathy Trust.
