Hernia

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body, such as part of the intestine, pushes through a weakness in the muscle or surrounding tissue wall. There are several types of hernia. Leaving a hernia untreated can lead to it becoming larger and uncomfortable, or to complications, so it is usually recommended that it is repaired.

A hernia operation is intended to repair and strengthen the abdominal wall. The intestine is pushed back into the right place, and a synthetic mesh is often used to strengthen the weak spot. The type of surgery will depend on the type of hernia.
