Colposcopy

A colposcopy procedure is an examination of the cervix, or neck of the womb. This is usually carried out to allow a doctor to look more closely at abnormal cells found during a routine smear test.

A piece of equipment called a colposcope is used for the procedure, during which small samples, or biopsies, can be taken and sent off for analysis. Abnormal cells can also be removed during this procedure.
